Onions have been used for thousands of years in various dishes and many cultures around the world. They can be eaten raw or cooked and are commonly used as flavoring  and seasoning. The World Health Organization (WHO) also support the use of onions for the treatment of poor appetite and preventing atherosclerosis.
HEALTH BENENFIT OF ONION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING : 

1. Fight Cancer:
Onion extracts is rich in a variety of sulfide a which provide some protections against tumor growth. Study reaveled that regular consumption of onions helps to reduce te risks of several types of cancers such as oral cancer, esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer and ovarian cancers. It is suggested that you consume one onion serving per day.

2. Cardiovascular improvement:
Regular consumption of onion has been show to lower high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. This is attributed to the sulfa compounds chromium and vitamin B6 in onions which helps prevent heart disease by lowering high homocysteine levels another potential risk factor for heart attack and stroke. 
3. Reduction of blood sugar level:
Regular consumption of onions has also shown lower blood sugar level. A study found that onions contain Allyl prophy 1 disulphide that helps to reduce the glucose level by increasing the amount of insulin in the blood. 
4.Relieves Tooth disorder:
recent research shows that onions may kill bacteria that cause pith decay and other dental problems. Chewing a raw onion for 2-3 a dt could kill all the germ in the mouth. Placing a small piece of I onion and the affected tooth or bad tooth can also help in relieving tooth ache.
5. Stimulating the circulation of blood : in mucous membrane it can be applied as poultice to boils, bruises, wound etc onion juice mixed with honey also can be the best home remedy for acne( skin problem that causes spot to appear in te face)
6. Stimulates hair growth:
Onions are rich in sulfur which is one if the essential nutrients in promoting hair growth. A study has shown that applying onion juice in scalp twice a week for 2 months wil stimulate hair growth.
7. Maintains bone health:
A study revealed that onions also builds connective tissues and bone due to a newly identified substance in it called ' Growth Plate Chondrocytes (GCP). Hence onions are very benfitial for women who are at risk of osteoporosis.
When buying onions, chose the fresh ones that are clean, well-shaped and have no opening at the neck. Avoid those that show sprouting or have no sign of a black mould as they indicate that they are old. In addition, poor quality bulbs often have soft spots, moisture at the neck and dark patches which may all be indications of decay.
